Bebras National Finals: Good Luck Darragh and Kate!

Best wishes to Kate and Darragh who tomorrow represent our school at the The Irish Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge National Final at NUI Maynooth.

This is an outstanding achievement to have reached the national finals and we are so proud of both of the students in our school to have been shortlisted.

The Bebras® Computing Challenge introduces computational thinking to students, by allowing them to solve interactive tasks online. It is run in over 40 countries and takes place every November. The tasks can be answered without prior knowledge about computational thinking or information and communication technology. The aim of Bebras is to get students all over the world excited about computing.

Well done and thank you to Mr.Clarke and all our teachers who have supported and promoted the challenge in our school. Ádh mór!

Mission Possible School Achievement Awards 2019

Huge congratulations to Ms.Munnelly and to all our students who this afternoon were presented with an award at the ‘Mission Possible School Achievement Awards’ at St.Patrick’s University Hospital in Dublin.

This award saw our school community shortlisted and recognised as having successfully promoted Positive Mental Health Initiatives, focusing on wellbeing, resilience and empowering our students with a tool kit for life. Weaving wellbeing, our garden of positivity, walk in my shoes, wellness boards are important and welcome additions to our school curriculum and initiatives.

Throughout the past number of years Ms.Munnelly has lead a number of transformational projects that have had a huge impact not alone on our students but on our staff members alike. Today was a fitting recognition for this great work. We sincerely appreciate her hard work and passion in ensuring that all our students are given the best chance to succeed in life.

Finally well done to the students who represented their school and colleagues back at base so well earlier.

We are very proud of all our students and their engagement in ensuring Positive Mental Health is at the forefront of all our minds. Maith sibh go léir!

Students of the Week Friday April 5th

We had a lovely assembly earlier presenting of our latest students of the week. We spoke as we enter the summer months of the importance of being active, having a health lifestyle and learning to enjoy different activities and sports. Most importantly, we focused on enjoyable participation and learning to work and play with others.

Our teachers this week praised students for their hard work and effort. Some expressed their delight at the maturity and level of common sense on display this week. It is always a pleasure to hear of children achieving with a task that they found difficult or succeeding in something new. It shows that their hard work will pay off, if they persevere. Children learn by example and the praise we heard today was a great example for all of our students.

Congratulations to those awarded Student of the Week. Keep up this great work!

To conclude a huge congratulations to Second Class who made their First Confession last evening. It was a lovely ceremony. A special thank you to Mr.Clarke who prepared the children so well, Mrs McCafferty for all her help in preparation/decorating the church and finally as always to Fr Doherty and Fr Johnston for their continued interest and support.

This month is Autism awareness month and Ms Ruane has coordinated a lovely display which certainly rings true in our school.

A busy week awaits and we conclude our second term. Reminder we close   for our Easter break on Friday April 12th and re-open on Monday 29th at the usual time. Have a lovely weekend.

Students of the Week Friday March 29th

As we gathered in assembly to award our pupils of the week we were once again reminded that there are students who could get this award every day of every week, such is their level of caring and kindness towards others and their conscientious attitude to their class work.

Today we learned of children who are continuously positive. They refuse, in spite of obstacles, to be anything but optimistic in their outlook. We also heard of pupils who have tried so hard to keep the rules and even though they aren’t getting it right all the time they are doing their best and are making huge improvements. We could not ask any more of our pupils. Others have made significant progress throughout this year and their teachers have really enjoyed tracking this.

To see how our students interact with each other and observe the level of respect they have for each other and our school is so rewarding for us as teachers. Maith sibh go léir!

Students of the Week Friday March 8th

Today in assembly we were amazed by all that is happening in our school in the different classes. From science experiments, to engineers’ week to drama, we are always busy and learning new skills. Assembly is a lovely time where we gather and hear about the learning that is going on in all the classes. Our teachers today talked about our positivity and our pride in our work and presentation. They talked about children who represent our school so well at outside events and show their pride in their work and performance.

Our pupils were described as hardworking, diligent and conscientious. To have any of these attributes is fabulous, but to hear all three being used is amazing. We are so proud. We heard of pupils applying themselves to any task set before them, focused on their work while still paying attention to how others are feeling around them. Our teachers spoke of children who have adapted to change easily and readily and are open to new things as a result. We have had a number of visitors to the school this week and the manners shown to them has been commented on. It’s a lovely thing to hear being praised in our children. Maith sibh go léir. Have a great weekend.

Finally, well done to our Funky Shoes Poster Competition winners. This competition is part of the ‘Walk in my Shoes’ mental health initiative that compliments the wonderful ‘Weaving Wellbeing’ programme that is rolled out in our middle and senior classrooms. We thank Ms.Munnelly for all her hard work coordinating and promoting this programme.

Engineering Week 2019

We had a lovely end to a very busy week with the return of Mayo Star and Engineering Ireland ambassador Tom Parsons to our school.

Tom gave a wonderful presentation about engineering and how it touches and make a difference to all aspects of our lives.

Tom is a wonderful role model and imparted great advice to all the children. Tom spoke of the importance of the key skills of problem solving, team work, appreciation of each others talents and hard work.

He enjoyed learning of the great work that is ongoing in our classrooms before participating in various engineering challenges with our students.

It was a pleasure to welcome Tom back to us again. As always he was very generous with his time,. We thank Tom sincerely for his visit and in particular his interest in meeting all our students. Míle buíochas Tom.

Finally, a very special word of thanks to all our students for all their hard work in preparation for todays event and in particular to Ms.Ruane and Mr Clarke who organised this special afternoon. It was as was mentioned a lovely way to conclude our week.

Great leaps: Does the length of our legs determine the height of our jumps?

Congratulations to the students of 5th and 6th Class who earlier displayed their excellent project ‘Great leaps: Does the length of your legs determine how high you can jump?’ at the Science Blast in the RDS Dublin

The project explored biomechanics and the science behind it. It looked at jumping in particular, how we can classify jumps and measure them effectively. It involved collectively engaging in/with a variety of scientific skills before establishing very interesting findings.

This was a real team effort, all of the students played a huge part in the success of the project, not alone in preparation but also in the confident manner they presented their work today. The children received many compliments and impressed the judges from whom they received wonderful feedback. They were rewarded with a beautiful trophy for their efforts.

We are so proud of each and every one of these students and indeed all our students throughout the school. They have set a wonderful example for all our younger students and proved that with hard work, determination, enthusiasm and confidence in their own abilities anything is possible.

We look forward to what the rest of the school year brings ….!

To conclude a special word of thanks to Ms.McDonagh and Mr.Rushe for all their hard work with Rang a Cúig agus a Sé with this project. We sincerely appreciate their continued hard work, talent and interest.

Finally thank you also to Ms.Durkan and Ms.Fitzgibbon for their support today and in the lead up to today’s exhibition. 5th and 6th Class were delighted that you were with them in Dublin!

Science Blast: Ádh mór ar phaistí Rang a Cúig agus a Sé

Best wishes to Ms McDonagh’s and Mr.Rushe’s Fifth and Sixth Class who tomorrow present their fantastic project ‘Does the length of your legs determine the height you can jump?’ at the Primary Science Blast in the RDS Dublin.

Our students have worked so hard preparing for this day. We are all so proud of their efforts and are certain they will enjoy their day.

A huge thank you to Ms.McDonagh and Mr.Rushe for all their interest and hard work with this project, we very much appreciate this.
