Students of the Week Friday May 31st

We are all very aware that we are heading into the final stretch of our school year. We think back to our first assembly in September while looking at all the faces in front of us, and we are acutely aware of the progress that has been made by each and every child that looks up at us, anxiously awaiting the announcement of the student of the week.

We heard today of pupils who have made a huge effort to help others who they see having difficulty with a task. We heard of the collective effort that classes had put into making days more enjoyable for others. We are reminded that every day counts. Every day as we go about our busy lives in school we have opportunities to impact on the lives of others, and it’s important to make that a positive one.

Our teachers spoke of children who do not always find things easy but who are making an effort every day to do it better. We were reminded by our teachers that small differences made over a period of time makes a big change. So as we finish our testing, we remember that these tests do not define our children. They don’t show their compassion, their gentle nature, their kindness to others, their sense of humour, their willingness to try new things and sometimes fail but try again, their best intentions, their talents and their endless possibilities.

We their teachers and you their parents, see these qualities everyday which is why we are so proud of them. Maith sibh go léir. Have a great weekend!

Dates for your Diary

Swimming We are very much looking forward to swimming which begins on Wednesday of next week in Charlestown Swimming Pool. A great start to a very busy month to conclude our school year!

5th and 6th Class School Tour

What a day Rang 5/6 had in Dublin for their school tour. From start to finish the day offered us lots of fantastic experiences. The weather forecast hadn’t been great, but the sun came out to welcome us to the capital on many occasions!

We had an early start at 8.30am but the excitement on everyone’s faces was a sign of all the great times ahead we would have. Our first stop in Dublin brought us to the Office of the Children’s Ombudsman, Niall Muldoon. We learned all about the Children’s Charter of Rights, had a cinema experience, group workshops and chill-out time on their fabulous buddha bags. As ever our students were a joy to have with us and were very impressive in their input into the session. Our facilitators Aoife and Stephen were very impressed by the children’s knowledge and interesting questions regarding children’s rights, and commented on the excellent levels of manners and enthusiasm.

We then headed off to our second destination St. Patrick’s Cathedral to board the hilarious, exciting and informative Viking Splash Tour. Sitting in the open-topped 1940’s amphibious vehicles used first in the D-Day landings in Normandy, our tour guides imparted vast knowledge on some of the most famous historical sites around the city. With the Bórd Gáis theatre in sight, we parked at the Grand Canal Basin and our guides passed out the life jackets for the next treat of the day…our buses took to the water and we continued our sightseeing of Dublin, all the time entertained by our guides. Back at base in Christchurch, we all agreed on one thing for sure…that this was so much fun!

Croke Park is a familiar stop for many, however we rarely get to look behind the scenes. The children were treated to a tour of the grounds and facilities. We got to see the player’s lounge, dressing rooms, warm up area and we even got to climb the hallowed steps to collect Sam! Once we had raised the famous cup, we took on the vertigo inducing Skyline tour. After climbing 140 steps, we were led on a bird’s eye tour of some more famous sights of the city, with lots of informative facts and tales from our tour guides. We saw Mountjoy Prison, Poolbeg, Christchurch, The Four Courts, Glasnevin Cemetary, the Olympic torch sculpture and much more. At 44 metres in the air we had an amazing view of the city and the grounds, along with the added excitement of the sky-high walk.

All that was left was our journey home with a yummy treat along the way! We got back to school at 10.00pm and were still all full of beans as we could not have asked for a better day, and as always our children made us so proud with their good humour, manners and sense of fun.

This certainly was a day to remember!

Girls Reach the Cumann na mBunscol County Final!

Our Girls team were victorious earlier in their Cumann na mBunscol County Semi Final. They defeated Crossmolina N.S in a thrilling game.

A good start is half the battle and this was very true of the girls first half performance. However, Crossmolina were difficult opponents and they came right back at us in the second half. To the girls great credit they showed great composure and desire to finish the game strongly and ensure progression to the Final.

We would like to thank Crossmolina for a very sporting game.It was a great contest. We have a lot of work to do in the coming week to prepare for our Final which will take place on Monday June 10th at 3.15pm in McHale park against Myna NS Kilmeena.

Well done to all the girls who have trained very well throughout the year.Today was a great team effort. We have a good panel and it really is fantastic to see so many talented players pushing so hard to get a starting place. It is also great to see players taking up Gaelic Football for the first time. These girls are also a very important part of our panel and are making great progress.

Maith sibh a chailiní!

Students of the Week Friday May 17th

We had a wonderful assembly to conclude another busy week. As always we were reminded of all the great things that are going on in our school and in our classrooms. This week we had Cumann na mBunscol, Active School’s activities, Green School Awards and preparation for our First Holy Communion not to forget excellent teaching and learning!

Our Students of the Week have a common theme this week. All of their teachers spoke about their positivity and desire to finish the year on a high.

We heard of children who just get on with things. If they see something that needs to be done, they just get on with it. This is a wonderful trait to see in our children and makes our job as teachers so much easier.

We also heard about pupils who are helpful, patient and empathetic of the needs of others and are willing to give up their own time to be of help and comfort to them. We concluded by learning of students with excellent manners who set a great example for all.

Finally our assembly concluded by wishing the students of our Second Class and their families a wonderful day tomorrow as they make their First Holy Communion and we thanked Mr.Clarke and Mrs. McCafferty for all their work in preparation for this special day. Maith sibh go léir.

Bianigí an taitneamh as an deireadh seachtaine.

5th and 6th Class Receive the Sacrament of Confirmation

Comhghairdeachas to the Ms.McDonagh’s 5th Class and Mr.Rushe’s 6th Class students who received the sacrament of Confirmation at St.James’ Church earlier.

Míle buíochas to all our parents, family members and to the children’s sponsors who played such an important role in lead up and during today’s ceremony A very special word of thanks also to Ms. McDonagh and Mr.Rushe who prepared the children so well and to Mrs McCafferty for all her hard work in ensuring the church looked beautiful. This was a real team effort.

Thank you to Fr Johnston who confirmed the children. It was our privilege to have Fr Johnston officiate and share this special celebration in the children lives. We thank him for a lovely ceremony. Thank you also to Fr.Doherty who assisted and again added so much to today’s ceremony.

Finally, it was really lovely to share this special day with our neighbours and friends from Barnacúige NS, Clooonlyon NS and Tavneena NS. We are grateful to all the local schools for their support in ensuring today was a great success for all.

We hope everyone enjoys the rest of this special day!

Students of the Week Friday May 10th

Today in assembly we recounted all the different activities we experienced for Active Schools Week. Just like everyone has different tastes in food, everyone enjoys different activities to stay active and healthy. It was great to have had such a variety to experience this week. Our teachers today talked about our positivity and our pride in taking part and helping and encouraging others during tasks. They talked about children who were helpful to those who weren’t finding the task as easy as them and were encouraging and thoughtful of their feelings.

Our pupils were described as hardworking, diligent and conscientious. They worked well in their class settings but also when mixed. We are so proud. We heard of pupils applying themselves to any task set before them, focused on their work while still paying attention to how others are feeling around them. Our teachers spoke of children who have adapted to changes and are open to trying new things as a result. Maith sibh go léir.

Finally very best wishes to the students of Fifth and Sixth Class who on Sunday next make their Confirmation. We hope each of you and your families enjoy this very special day.
